Straight Forward, daughter of Pennstar, was 2nd at the Venango Grouse Trial Club Open Derby, 11/14/2010. This adds to a string of wins she has recorded this fall including 1st at the Pennsylvania Grouse Trial Club Open Derby, 2nd at the West Branch Grouse Trial Club Open Derby, and 3rd at the Nittany Valley Open Derby. “Cracker” is among the leading contenders for the Flanagan Award for the top cover dog derby. “Cracker” has become known for her drive and running class–two ‘must-have’ qualities for an all-age cover dog prospect. She has handled birds with derby manners in each of these wins. “Cracker’s” wins are a testament to her breeding, Keystone Red Rage x Quixstar. She is very much like her Mom who unfortunately passed away this month (11/10) at a young age. Speed, flash and remarkable bird handling ability were marks of Quixstar and we hope Straight Forward will continue to enhance her record and her abilities as she matures.
Sorber Run Serena passes–October, 2010
Sorber Run Serena, dam of Grand National Grouse Champion Full Tilt and multiple all-age grouse winner Bold Move, has died. Serena was a dog bred by our kennel mating Grindstone to Scirrocco. Grindstone was by Body Guard and Grindstone’s influence on the speed and flashiness of Serena’s offspring was obvious. Grindstone was an exceptionally classy dog and this was passed on through to the next generations. Serena’s dam was also sired by Grand National Grouse Ch. Body Guard. Body Guard’s drive is apparent in Serena and her pups.
Serena was whelped in our kennel in the same year that we had a litter by Super Ghost x Ch. Northern Anndee. This litter by Super Ghost produced two exciting pups who would go on to make a significant mark on the breed–Pennstar and his sister First Option. In workouts that year, 2000, Serena had two formidable competitors for space on our dog truck. Eventually we sold Serena to Donnie Spencer of Sugar Valley, PA, and he placed her–most notably winning the Lancaster County Open Derby with Pennstar 2nd. Later, Donnie sold her to his buddy going back to high school days, Walt Konopke of Noxen, PA. Walt used her to hunt grouse the rest of her life. Through the generosity of Walt, we were able to lease Serena to produce litters by Pennstar. It is from the first mating that we got Full Tilt. After she won the Flanagan Award, we repeated the mating and got our Bold Move. Two terrific dogs that are currently competing at the top of our sport is a great legacy made possible by Sorber Run Serena. As Walt said when he reported her passing to me, “She went out on top–the dam of the reigning Grand National Grouse Champion”.
Jumpstart Wins H. Y. Cooper Amateur Shooting Dog Classic
Jumpstart, daughterof Pennstar, won the prestigous Harold Y. Cooper Amateur Shooting Dog stake in mid-October, 2010. Jumpstart was handled by her owner Mike Spotts of Bloomsburg, PA. The Cooper Classic is a highlight stake of the Pennsylvania Amateur Grouse Trial Club’s fall program and has been run for decades with notable dogs having claimed this win. “Woodie” had a fast, snappy and hard-driving race similar to those she put down in other starts and wins this fall (including 1st in the West Branch Open All-Age). She interspersed her hunting with four perfectly handled and stylish finds to grab the first prize.
Wintergreen Max Wins Runner-Up Northern Michigan Cover Dog Championship
Wintergreen Max, son of Pennstar, was Runner-Up Champion at the inaugural running of the Northern Michigan Cover Dog Championship which began October 24, 2010. The 86 dog draw is one of the largest fields ever to compete in a coverdog stake. Max put forth a thrilling effort on the ground and near time point was called. The one judge said he saw a grouse run from the cover. “Mickey” Fancher of Hubertus, Wisconsin, Max’s owner and handler, showed confidence in his dog when he tapped him to relocate. Mickey held his breath as Max ripped forward and then jammed up on point. The grouse was put to wing with Max standing tall and steady. This win adds to Max’s record that includes having won the Wisconsin Grouse Championship.
Fernwood Cove’s Bella wins Grouse Futurity
Fernwood Cove Bella won the 66th Grand National Grouse Futurity held at Milan, NH the last weekend of October, 2010. Bella, daughter of Pennstar ex Magic Mist Bandit, is owned by Maine resident, Jim Gill of Harrisoin, ME. She was handled by her breeder and trainer, Joe Dahl also from Bangor, ME.
Bella had a forward, hard hunting race capped by a solid grouse find with good manners. She’s a stylish dog who flows over the ground easily. You could tell that she had been hunted hard in the weeks prior to the running by her owner as she went to the objectives in her search and was rewarded. Bella began her winning with a placement in the Grand National Grouse Puppy Classic last spring and then she went on to also win this fall’s prestigous North American Woodcock Futurity.
Impact Player wins at Grand National Grouse Futurity and North American Woodcock Futurity
Impact Player
Impact Player, son of Pennstar, won 2nd at the 66th Grand National Grouse Futurity held at Milan, NH the last days of October, 2010. Earlier in the month, “Joe” was third at the North American Woodcock Futurity in Nova Scotia. In Canada “Joe” was handled by professional Dave Hughes who is responsible for “Joe’s” early and quick development, particularly in handling wild birds. “Joe” was bred by Maine resident Joe Dahl (from whence he got his name) and he’s a littermate to the 1st place winner of the Grouse Futurity. Pundits are still checking to see if littermates have ever placed 1-2 in the Grouse Futurity’s history. In both stakes Joe handled wild birds with exceptional manners.
At the Grouse Futurity, “Joe” was braced with his winning sister. ” Joe” took a minute to get used to the terrain and boggy footing but he was soon in high gear and laying forward. Midway through the heat, he pointed ahead with a straight, high tail. The grouse blew out as his handler and co-owner, Dick Brenneman, approached.
2010 – Full Tilt – Runner- Up Champion
Full Tilt, sister of Bold Move, is named Runner-Champion at the New York State Grouse Championship (80 entries), 9/13/10. . After having a litter of pups this summer, “Callie” is back in the championship winner’s circle with a sensational effort that bested a field in which many dogs had multiple grouse/woodcock finds.
2010 – Bold Move wins 2nd in 1st grouse trial season
Bold Move wins 2nd in the first grouse trial of the season. “Fire” had an exciting grouse find and a strong classy race to place 2nd in a field of 40 dogs at the Lost Pond grouse trial held at the Flanagan farm in New York 9/5/10.
Our Latest News
Full Tilt’s win of The Grand National Grouse Championship is the highest competitive coverdog accomplishment. We are thrilled with this win and want to especially thank pro Dave Hughes and his assistant Ryan Frame. Dave has helped us develop our dogs for more than twenty years. He is “The King of the Woods”.
Other all-age coverdogs sired by Pennstar are winning in Championships and Classics this fall, proving that Pennstar progeny are readily finished, often by amateurs, and can find wild birds no matter what part of the country they are hunting in.
Who would have imagined in 1981 when Dick took Wire to the Grand National Grouse Puppy Classic and came home with a red ribbon that it would all lead to this. A lot of good dogs have been a part of our lives over the last two and a half decades. It’s especially rewarding to see pups that we have had a hand in compete successfully in the top cover dog stakes. We tip our hats to the owners who have been committed to their dogs and the work that it takes to develop and campaign a quality cover dog. A synopsis of the latest activities involving our dogs include:

Full Tilt
Full Tilt is the Winner of The Grand National Grouse Championship for 2009. This daughter of Pennstar bested a field of over 73 of the top cover dogs by sizzling the hour course at Marienville, PA, and pointing a group of five grouse with thrilling style. This was not a win by default as the star-studded field had 28 dogs who pointed grouse or woodcock. “Callie” fulfilled the promise of her win of the 2006 Flanagan Award (Cover Dog Derby of the Year). Callie’s running class, drive and bird finding epitomizes the goal we have strived for 30 years to achieve. Dave Hughes did a masterful job of preparing Callie and handling her to this win.
Sparq
Sparq, not yet 2 years old, continued to win in limited campaigning when she bested a strong field at the West Branch Open Derby, 3/10. “Diamond”, our Pennstar daughter, ran a searching forward race. In the heavy cover, she separated herself as really determined to hunt. At the finish she was a handful to bring to the pickup. At 42 days pregnant, “Diamond’s drive and speed were impressive (this is the first really pregnant dog we have run). We didn’t start her after this and about three weeks later she whelped a nice litter of six pups sired by Bold Move.
Call Me Kate
The PA Grouse Championship is a top-tier event. Winning the PA, or getting any piece of it, is a giant accomplishment for any dog. Call Me Kate, female, sired by North Star (deceased son of Pennstar) continued to impress as dog worthy of this high recognition when she was named Runner-Up in the PA Grouse Championship (11/09). Craig Merlington, her owner, handler Kate and Craig has done virtually all the work to bring this impressive young dog to compete, with distinction, at the highest level. We will be hearing more from this team. While Pennstar is just one of the grandparents of Kate, and other quality dogs are certainly contributing to her genetic ability, Kate’s big win is proof that Pennstar dogs can produce dogs who’ll compete successfully with the best.
Wintergreen Cody
Mickey Fancher handled his Pennstar male, Wintergreen Cody, to Runner-Up Champion honors at this year’s Wisconsin Grouse Championship. Last year he handled Cody’s brother, Wintergreen Max, to the Championship title at this same event. Max earlier won the Flanagan Award. As an amateur, Mickey has done a fantastic job in developing these two young Pennstar performers.
Hummer
Hummer continued his winning ways by capturing Runner-Up honors at the Rich Tuttle All-Age Classic. He successfully handled a grouse on day one of the multi-day stake sponsored by the Venango Grouse Trial Club and held at Marienville, PA. The Foreman brothers are the trainers and handlers of Hummer for Kentuckian, Jim Humphrey. Hummer won consistently last year as a derby on the grouse circuit and in his first season as an all-age this win shows his steady development on wild birds and it’s a big step forward in his career.
Ghost Train Whirlwind
Ghost Train Whirlwind named Winner, The Fruchey Classic, Again. Tom Fruchey handled his Pennstar female to the Classic title in a large field of the top coverdogs in the nation. This Michigan located stake, named for the Fruchey family who have had four generations of their family train and compete grouse dogs, is a sought after title. For almost every year of the forty plus years of the Classic’s running, a Fruchey has had an entry in this event, It was not until 2008 that the event was won by a Fruchey family member, as Tom Fruchey guided Whirlwind to the winner’s circle. The win again this year adds distinction not only to the Fruchey legacy but to Whirlwind’s ability. Decades of dedication to the sport, both competing and managing grouse trials, have been rewarded with a number of championships but this win was something special and meaningful–Again. Whirlwind is sired by Pennstar and it makes us happy to have played a small part in this accomplishment by Tom which the whole family shares in.
Star’s Misty Willow
Star’s Misty Willow, Pete Casgrain’s female sired by Pennstar, was named runner-up Michigan All-Age Grouse Dog of the Year. Willow had a fantastic year in the ’08-’09 trial season racking up grouse finds at such a pace that she has become a widely recognized example of a bird dog with the skill of finding and pointing grouse. This award adds an exclamation point to a dream season for Willow and Pete.
Jumpstart
Jumpstart, daughter of Pennstar ex Grouse River Jessie, has come into the ownership of Mike Spotts of Bloomsburg, PA. Mike guided “Woodie” to her first shooting dog win at the DuBois–Beaver Meadows fall trial. In that same event, he put the first win on Jumpstart’s six-month old daughter, Spitfire, sired by Bold Move.
Pennstar
Pennstar, now 9 years of age, is retired from field trial competition following his fifth wild bird championship win at the PA Grouse Championship (81 entrants). With this win, Rock joined an elite group of cover dogs, as very few setters or pointers have reached the milestone of five championships on wild birds in the 100+ year history of cover dog events. Rock’s record, 30-60-301 attests to the ability of his offspring and are a tribute to him and the generations of breeding in which we and others have thoughtfully invested. Now that he has sired the Winner of The Grand National Grouse Championship, his prowess as an historic sire is secure. We are grateful that we’ve been given such a good dog to campaign and use to breed. Pennstar is in excellent health and he continues to be available at stud.
Bold Move
Bold Move, younger brother of Grand National Grouse Champion Full Tilt, is being campaigned by pro Dave Hughes this fall. He has made some strong bids in the northeastern grouse championships. Offspring from “Fire’s” first litter are winning at an early age and showing the class, drive and bird sense of their sire. Our team has great confidence in Bold Move’s ability and recommend him as a sire that can produce dogs to compete at the top.
First Option
First Option, Pennstar’s sister, has been retired. “Anndee” has had a fine career that includes winning the Grand National Grouse Puppy Classic against 56 entrants. She was runner-up in the Flanagan Award competition for the top cover dog derby and went on to win five firsts in all-age grouse trials. “Anndee” lives with my hunting buddy, Jim Smythe, of Lititz, PA.
Quickstar
Quixstar is retired. One of the classiest females we have owned both on the ground an on point, Riggs is an excellent wild bird finder. On a hunting and training trip to North Dakota in September Riggs was a star at handling huns, prairie chickens and pheasants. Most all her finds were steady to wing and shot and she showed the range and drive that she demonstrated as a young dog in our string. Riggs now lives with my hunting pal, Jim Smythe of Lititz, PA. Her six month old daughter by Keystone Red Rage recently won the Nittany Valley Open Puppy and was 3rd in the West Branch Open Derby in September,09.
2010 Spring Cover Dog Season has kicked off…
The 2010 spring cover dog season kicked off this past weekend with the West Branch trial. Five of the winners of this trial, including the 1st and 2nd Open All-Age and the 1st place Open Derby are dog are dogs we bred and/or own. On this good look forward to the new season but also reflect on some nice wins dogs who trace their origins back to our kennel have had in the first half of this field trial year.
